Imagine what could be possible if we simply took the bold step of asking for what we know we deserve. And what if the answer was yes?
Asking is an act of courage—a risk that moves us closer to our dreams.
So why do we hesitate?
Fear. Fear that the answer will be no, reinforcing our doubts and feelings of unworthiness.
Our minds go into overdrive, "gathering evidence” to convince us that asking isn’t even worth it.
But, what if we asked anyway?
I have a client who discovered they were paying significantly more in rent than anyone else in the commercial building where they lease a space.
Understandably, they were frustrated and upset.
As we explored ways to address the situation—whether to take action or let it go—I encouraged them to ask for a rent reduction.
Their immediate response? Resistance.
They were convinced the answer would be no and gave me multiple reasons (gathering evidence) why they’d never get the reduction.
I urged them to ask anyway. And guess what?
The property manager said yes!
The simple act of asking for what was fair saved my client $10,000 a year!!!
What if asking for what you want could save you thousands, improve a relationship, land you a promotion, or open doors you never imagined?
What might be possible if you simply asked?
Today, I invite you to pause, take a few deep breaths, and ask yourself, “What is truly holding me back from asking for what I want?”
Below are some common reasons people hesitate to ask for what they want—see if any of them resonate with you.
✅ Fear of Rejection
Worry that the answer will be no and how that will feel.
✅ Fear of Judgment
Worry that others will perceive us as demanding.
✅ Believing We Don't Deserve It
Feeling unworthy of what we want and deserve.
✅ Avoiding Discomfort
Not wanting to create conflict or feel uncomfortable.
✅ Assuming We'll Hear No
Deciding that we won’t get what we want, so we don’t bother asking.
✅ Not Knowing How to Ask
Lacking the confidence to make a clear and compelling request.
✅ People Pleasing
Putting other's needs above our own well-being because we want to be liked.
✅ Past Experiences
A history of rejection makes asking feel pointless.
✅ Underestimating Our Power
Not realizing how much influence we have or believing we can’t change the situation.
After reflecting on this list, you may have more clarity about why you hesitate to ask for what you want.
Now, let’s explore some tips to help you ask for what you deserve with confidence.
✅ Get Clear on What You Want
Be specific. Clarity increases your chances of getting a yes.
✅ Believe You’re Worthy
Remind yourself that you deserve to ask. Reframe any self-doubt acknowledging that asking is self-advocacy.
✅ Prepare Your Request
Plan what you’ll say. Keep it concise, direct, and positive. Example: “I’d love to take on more leadership opportunities. Is there room for me to step into a bigger role?”
✅ Use Confident Language - Avoid using phrases like "I was just wondering…" or "I know this might be a long shot, but..." Instead, say "I’d like…" or "I am requesting…"
✅ Practice Asking
Start with small requests to build confidence. The more you ask, the easier it becomes.
✅ The Power of Silence
After making your request, pause. Let the other person respond instead of filling the silence.
✅ Follow Up
If you don’t get an immediate answer, check back. Persistence shows you value what you’re asking for.
✅ Celebrate the Act of Asking
Regardless of the outcome, acknowledge your courage.
Every ask moves us closer to what we want and the more we practice asking, the easier—and more natural—it becomes.
Imagine the possibilities when we choose ourselves and confidently ask for what we want.
